It took me a while too, but I'm now pretty solid on my position that Flash is for interactive applications (serious stuff), or "creative" artistic, media-heavy promotional stuff. Let's leave it to HTML/CSS for the rest. As you mention, there are workarounds for almost all the problems- search engines, back buttons, but man- not without some major hassles...
